Went to Giant hypermarket (Kelana Jaya, Malaysia) this afternoon (very free, no need to work. ha haha...) Glade (Malaysia) have a special corner selling their car-air-freshener there....

They have a special Chinese New Year display standy with a big poster on the top. On the poster, there is a friendly cute:) fortune god with giant chinese golden nugget. Thats' the Fortune God (from the same series) Carrefour (Malaysia) using to do their Chinese New Year campaign last year. (read related post)

My Fortune God on China Press Header

Those of you (from Malaysia), who are reading China Press (Malaysia) with see this Chinese New Year Special header...

That cute fat friendly Fortune God was done by me 2 years ago 2007, that time i only like to draw by using Photoshop. I did 2 versions of this Fortune God character during that time (see related posts), but you can't find both of it at istockphoto because istock ONLY accept illustration in vector (EPS) format.

I remember last time when i upload my Crossplay Girl Horoscope series (read related post), they approved my first 6 uploaded illustrations but they reject my others 6 on the second upload. they said it was a vector illustration (how they know that?!) & ask me to upload the vector format. I reply by email & told them it was a pixel base illustration i created in Photoshop, so thats' no other vector format in this world. Because of this reason you may found i have less stock illustration at istock compare with others.

But starting from end last year, i'm re-illustrate most of my Photoshop illustrations in vector format.

The Pen

This is a very expensive fountain pen. The penpoint uses the blend tool. The gradation mesh uses only the grip part. It doesn't use it for another. After acknowledgment is received from the agency of the pen manufacturer in Japan, it draws. ~Yukio Miyamoto

Malaysia Paypal Goooodnews!!!

NOW we(Malaysian) can withdraw money direct to our Malaysia Bank account!

Just log-in to Paypal this morning and notice this latest good news.

After log-in, the first thing they(Paypal) ask you to renew your new password(must NEW one), set 2 security questions and conform your email.

After that, when i click on the withdraw link, the new page come out and there's a new button(link) with the words "Withdraw to your Bank in Malaysia".

Then i go back to my profile and add the Bank Account info. Just key in your account number and the MEPS number(you can find out your bank's MEPS number by click on the details link).

That's all.

It only take 2~3 working days to transfer your money from Paypal to your bank account, and its FOC(free on charge) if your withdraw is more than RM400(minimum withdraw). Less than RM400 will be charge RM3 per-withdraw. And it seems like NO withdraw limit.

update 11 Nov 2009

After i transfer money to my Malaysia Bank account, i received email from Paypal:-

You asked us on Nov 9, 2009 to transfer $$$ MYR from your PayPal account to your bank account. We are processing your request.
The transfer takes up to 2-3 business days.
The money should be in your bank account by Nov 16, 2009

Nov 16? its like 1 week time(7 days), not 2-3 business days?

Hahahaha! i check my bank account this morning, the money i transfer from Paypal to my Malaysia bank saving account last Monday is already there. They REALLY only took 2~3 business days to process.

Withdraw from PayPal

My friend just can't wait to get their money after received all the payment from the RF stock site and keep asking me how to withdraw money from PayPal....

1) Go to paypal.com, log-in as usual and click on "withdraw" link on the top of the page.

2) On the Withdraw Funds page, click on "Withdraw funds to your card". Remember there's a USD$5 withdraw fee (per-withdraw).

3) Next page, type in the amount you wish to withdraw. example:- USD$185. Make sure the card number is correct and click on "continue" button.

4) Review your withdraw details and click on "Conform" button.

5) Done. You can click and go back to your account or log out.

Trace the usage of your picture

A reader Oxe Giolorate ask me how i manage to trace/findout where my illustration was use?
I guess i am just lucky :) When i go to supermarket, i saw a box of chocolate with my illustration printed on top. When i open the newspaper, i found my illustration at the corner of a ad.

But according to a post i read before (from Shutterstock forum), there's a website where we can trace our picture...

What is TinEye?
TinEye is a reverse image search engine. You can submit an image to TinEye to find out where it came from, how it is being used, if modified versions of the image exist, or to find higher resolution versions. TinEye is the first image search engine on the web to use image identification technology rather than keywords, metadata or watermarks.

How does TinEye work?
When you submit an image to be searched, TinEye creates a unique and compact digital signature or 'fingerprint' for it, then compares this fingerprint to every other image in our index to retrieve matches. TinEye can even find a partial fingerprint match.
TinEye does not typically find similar images (i.e. a different image with the same subject matter); it finds exact matches including those that have been cropped, edited or resized.

What kind of images can I submit to TinEye?
File type: JPEG, PNG and GIF image are all acceptable.
Image dimensions: TinEye works best with image that are at least 300 pixels in either dimension, but can accept images as low as 100 pixels in either dimension.
File size: 1 megabyte is the maximum file size.
Watermarked images: For best results, visibly watermarked images should be avoided as TinEye may search for the watermark and not the image itself.

What happens to the images I upload to TinEye?
Images uploaded to TinEye are not added to the search index, nor are they made accessible by other users. Copyright for all images submitted to TinEye remains with the original owner/author.
Search images submitted by unregistered users are automatically discarded after one hour. Links to these searches will stop working after one hour, unless another registered user happens to have saved the same image.
Search images submitted by registered users are saved, if search history is enabled in their user Profile. Saved searches are available from the History page, and permanent URL links to any saved search can be bookmarked or shared with friends.

Why can't TinEye find my image? I know it is on the web.
There is a huge and growing amount of images on the web, and TinEye has only crawled a fraction of them so far. We probably missed your image because we have not crawled the website(s) where it appears, or we don't have the latest updates from the site(s). 72 dpi or 300 dpi?

This is a very frequently asked question (FAQ) ask by readers who interested in submitting their works to Royalty Free Stock site. "Should i save my file in 72 dpi or 300 dpi?"....

Let me start to explain with this few terms we often see:-
dpi = dots per-inch (pixel/inch) (pic 01)
MP = million pixels

pic 01

For those who're working in agency or publishing company will know, for better printing quality, they'll set their picture in 300 dpi. For web designer, they will set their picture in 72 dpi (preview quality).

Here's the minimum file requirement for:-
Shutterstock 4.0MP (new photographer)
Dreamstime 3.0MP
Fotolia at least 1600 x 2400 pixels (3.8MP)
123rf.com at least 4MP (2200 x 1700 pixels)
istockphoto at least 1200 x 1600 pixels (1.9MP)
stockexpert at least 800 x 600 pixels
(off cause the bigger, the better :)

To make our job easier, we produce a picture with 4MP (or bigger) will satisfied all the Royalty Free Stock site.

How big is a file with 4MP (million pixels)?
As long as your file's width(W) x height(H) more than 4,000,000 (4 million). Example, 2400 x 1800 = 4,320,000 (4.3MP). So, if you set your file at 300 dpi, it become 8 inch x 6 inch(pic 02). If you set it at 72 dpi, it will be 33.333 inch x 25 inch(pic 03). But the end, BOTH the files are SAME (4.3MP).

One of the most making money Royalty Free Stock photographer from Australia....

She was a exclusive artist for istockphoto and her username is hidesy. Here's some info about her taken from smh.com.au:-

In 2003, Amanda owned a simple three-megapixel point-and-shoot camera that she barely knew how to use. Now, in this past year, she has made enough money from her photography business to support herself and take on her husband as her business manager. And, as a photographer, she is completely self-taught.

Five years ago, at the age of 23, Amanda discovered the stock photo service, istockphoto.com. Amanda took one look at iStockphoto examples and decided that she could do that. Her only real experience with photography to that point was doing Photoshop image retouching for professionals.

So, with her little point-and-shoot she took some photos, went through the enrolment procedure for iStockphoto and sent off her samples. From that point she hasn't looked back. Right now she has more than 10,000 photos on istockphoto.com and the annual paid download of her pictures is approaching 140,000.

These stock photo libraries rely on cliche images for their business and Amanda says that the big sellers are attractive young women, wearing headsets and smiling a huge smile of the "I'm just here to help" style. Since my first upload of the businessman series early this year, the respond was good...

Lots of buyer love it very much. Many of them wish to have it in vector format. Unfortunately that series of illustrations was paint/illustrate in Photoshop... (we never said that! buyer)

The golden rule of business, the client(buyer) are always right, so i re-illustrate this businessman series in vector format. (we never ask you to do that. buyer)

But because of the limitation of Ai8, we can't use lots of the layer effect. The illustrations come up looks a bit simple (very little) compare with the previous jpeg version. (who cares?! buyer)

Request payment from istockphoto

The minimum payment at istockphoto is USD$100 (to Paypal).
So when your earning have reach USD$100 or more (congratulations!) you can start request payment from istockphoto and transfer to Paypal account...

1. After log-in, click on your username or click on the "Balance: $XXX.XX"(picture 01)

Another way to draw vector illustration

To a friend of my, who got a very good drawing skill and want to build his vector stock (cos can sell better price), but no so familiar with the illustrator tools...

"Very hard to remember all the tools..."

"Can't control the color gradient as good as you..." (TQ :)
"Why we have to do it this way? if in Photoshop... bla bla bla"

Here's a idea for you. Just draw it in black & white lines drawing format. Who said vector illustration must have colors? Who said vector illustration must have gradients?
All you have to do is draw it as usual (on paper), scan it on to your computer and trace/construct by using the pen tool in illustrator. Or you can just use the pencil tool or the brush tool, select a brush type and start to draw like usual.

Realistic Vector ≠ Best Selling

Your Illustrator's skill is very good. You want to illustrated a "photo-reallistic" master piece...

You spend 2 weeks, 4 hours a day (after work), finally your nice fresh shinning beautiful apple vector illustration is done. You start to upload to istockphoto (cos istockphoto can get better pay for vector download).
Few days later, the vector got approved and listed in your gallery. After few weeks you maybe manage to get 1 or 2 downloads but many reviews and very high rating... You start to wonder, why so many people like my work but not much download? What's wrong with my work? It look so real and the gradient was so perfectly done...

Actually there's nothing wrong with your artwork, it's fine, but if the buyer want to buy a realistic apple, they call always look for a real apple photo image rather than a "photo-reallistic" vector apple.
If the buyer is looking for vector, they'll only buy/download the vector that match their campaign/project's concept and not because of how nice the gradient was make.

Green Earth International Graphic Design Competition

Following the success of last year's 'love your earth' competition, designboom and the DA design association japan have joined together, along with TOBU DEPARTMENT STORE to organize the 'green earth' international design competition...

Participation is open to applicants from every country in the world, to professionals, students, and design-enthusiasts. Free registration required.

The subject of the international competition is
green earth

TOBU DEPARTMENT STORE is affiliated with world heritage kew gardens and helps organize campaigns to help raise awareness and protect the earth. For the competition 'green earth' you are asked to enter projects in to one or both of the following 2 categories:

'green'
Create a graphic artwork that illustrates the environmental protection and how human beings and nature could coexist in a greener world.

'earth'
Give the gift of a greener world at christmas. create a graphic artwork that will make this festive time of the year a moment to consider what we can do to help our planet's survival. You can use iconic christmas motifs in your design for example reindeers, trees, etc.

Awards
The designers of the 5 winning entries will be granted with cash prize awards :
- 1st prize: ¥500,000 YEN
- 2nd prize: ¥200,000 YEN
- 3 x 3rd prize(s): ¥100,000 YEN (each)
TOBU DEPARTMENT STORE will use a selection of the shortlisted entries for disposable shopping bags and for other promotional material. The eco-bags will be also presented during the tokyo designer’s week 2008.

Your designs must satisfy the following criteria:

Original/innovative design

Your design should be related to the theme 'green earth'. Deliver an instant message with your image.

Flexibility
It should be easy to adapt your design for different types of mediums, flags, stamps, posters etc.
Your design could be used in a single color.

Registration deadline
Application registration will be accepted from june 17 through august 26, 2008.

Submit your entry / entries
Whether you're an individual or group, you can only submit a maximum of 3 works.

For each entry you are required to prepare a hi-res file of your design approximately 50 x 50 cm (vertical format) , 300dpi (the original hi-res image(s) of your entry will be requested if your work is shortlisted.)

Up to 3 files for uploading to our server each entry should consist of maximum three images:
please note: use only .gif, .jpeg, (72 dpi) max 100 KB each file, RGB color mode.
maximum image size for uploading is 600 (width) x 700 (height) pixels..

The original high-resolution image(s) will be requested if your work is shortlisted.

Explanation of ideas
You have the possibility to explain your design by entering a brief description, in the text entry fields (english text only, explanation is expected to be concise).

Tips to avoid rejection

Why they reject my works? What's wrong with my photo? I think it's very nice... #@$&%#$... i speed 3 days + 2 nights to illustrate this and they just...

To avoid your submition being reject, here's some tips taken from those RF site, plus some of my own experiences :)

1. Photo MUST be taken by YOU, or artwork created by you personally! You must be the legal owner of copyright to the uploaded file. This is very important.

2. All photos containing recognizable people MUST be accompanied by SIGNED Model Release form

2. Meet the minimum resolution requrement. Some RF site they need 2MB, 3MB, 4MB... To save time(acceptable for ALL RF site), ready your image in 4MB or more.

3. No fully exposed buttocks, genitals, fully exposed female breasts or fully exposed female nipples.

5. NO visible/recognizable logo (copyright infringement).

6. Limited use subject, but you think is nice...

What is a pinhole camera? How does it work?
A pinhole camera uses a very small hole to create a lens for the light to enter and expose the film. These Readymech Cameras can be downloaded and printed at your computer, built, and used to make your own pinhole camera!

How do I take a photo with a pinhole camera?
Set the camera on a firm surface and open the shutter for the correct amount of time, then close the shutter and wind the film.

How long should I expose my film for?
All camera instructions come with exposure times for various lighting conditions, but exposure times may vary depending on the type of film you're using.

My photos are coming out entirely grey or cloudy - how can I fix this?
There might be a light-leak in the construction of your camera. Try carefully taping any seams with black tape. Also, make sure that your cuts are very accurate.

What supplies do I need?
You will need:
• A printer
• Some good printer paper
• One thin cereal box for the light-safe interior
• A razor blade for cutting
• Some double-sided tape or glue
• Thin needle for making a pinhole
• Small piece of aluminum foil or soda can to puncture with the needle
• One new roll of film, preferably ISO200
• One film canister from which the film has been removed. You can empty a new roll, or get an empty canister at any photo supply store.

Why my RF sales are not improving? Why there's so little download this month? Why nobody want to download my works? Here's some tips taken from those RF site + my own experiences :)

1. Quantity (quality as well). The more stocks you have, the bigger chances buyer will discover your gallery.

2. Photos of PEOPLE are VERY popular. Get your friends and family involved.

3. Submit to FREE DOWNLOAD section. Can attract more people to your gallery. Read related post How to submit image for FREE download?

4. Think like a buyer (art director, designer...1). What type of picture you're looking/searching for your project.

5. Any photo that looks like a postcard or magazine cover is FANTASTIC!

Finally i bought my self a DSLR camera, Sony a200. Now i can start to submit photo images to all the Royalty Free Stock site.

Can produce more RF stock. Have more range of RF stock in my gallery. Taking photo is always faster then illustrate.

Cos it's the most economical DSLR in the market. With the price of RM1799 (Malaysia money), body + a kit lens (18-70mm, F3.5-5.6), 10.2 megapixels, good enough to make money:)

You can get this price (RM1799) around Kuala Lumpur and Petaling Jaya. This price is ONLY for the body and lens, NOT included the Memory Card. So shop they are selling the market price (RM1999) but FREE camera bag, 2 GB memory card and tripod.

My first USD $500 Wthdraw from Paypal

Last month, i decided to withdraw my first USD $500 from my Paypal. Those are the Royalty Free Stock commissions i have make from Shutterstock, dreamstime and fotolia.

Monday 10th April, i log-on to Paylpal, click on "withdraw", key in $500 (Paypal withdraw limit for Malaysia is $500) minus $5 processing fees, i get USD $495. It say they will take 5~7 days to process.

After 1 weeks, Monday 17th April, i go to Public Bank ATM machine to check my account balance, WOW! Malaysia Ringgit RM1500++ is there! (USD $495 x 3.1)

In this procedure, i manage to proof 4 things:
1. Shutterstock really pay.
2. Dreamstime really pay.
3. Fotolia really pay.
4. Malaysian can withdraw money from Paypal to Public Bank Debit Card.

Lately Yohoo! Web Hosting have come up this package. USD $11.95 monthly for UNLIMITED disk space. UNLIMITED data transfer. UNLIMITED email storage. FREE domain. With this kind of features, i think we can set-up our own Royalty Free stock download site:)

Set up a website is not so diffecult, they (Yahoo) even provide you the web site design tools. So how much you plan to sell per-image? USD $300? USD $100? or USD $1? Is all up to you.
Or we can follow something like Freerange.com. They're giving away images for FREE, but they make money from Google Adsense. But if we submit our images to them, we only get 80% of the Adsense income.

How i submit Vector illustration

I start to submit vector illustration after many months. Here's a recap of me submitting vector illustration to all the 5 RF stock site.

Preparations

After finish checking and conform no more open path/open shape (read related post), converted ALL stroke path to outline, save it to EPS (ai8 version).
Save one more svg format for fotolia.
Export the same file (as big as you can, for Dreamstime) to a JPEG format for preview purpose.
From this JPEG file, save it into 3 sizes; 400x500(for Shutterstock), 1600x1600(for 123RF) and 1900x2800(for istockphoto).

Submit to Shutterstock

Upload 2 files for each vector illustration, 1 EPS file and 1 JPEG file (400x500).
Both the file MUST be SAME name, except for the extension. (eg. giraffe.eps and giraffe.jpg)

Submit to 123RF.com

After log-in, click on "Upload" link on top.
Choose upload "Illustrations (EPS). Each file must not exceed 5MB.
Attach a RGB JPEG preview of your image at 1600 x 1600 pixels or larger.

Submit to Dreamstime.com

Submit the original size JPEG format file first.
As soon as they are accepted or right from the first submission you can also upload an additional format (ai or eps format)

Submit to fotolia

Upload the svg format but make sure not larger than 1.2MB.

Submit to istockphoto

Upload the EPS file and the JPEG preview(1900x2800), your preview can be larger if you wish.
Upload one more EXTRA file, you skatch (lo-res JPEG will do) at step-4, to prove you are the original creator.

Tutorial 01 :: How i illustrate Cute Male Big Head Budhha

In this step by step tutorial I’d like to explain the process I use for illustrating the Cute Male Big Head Buddha. The tools I use are Wacom and Adobe Photoshop.

1. I start up with a rough drawing. No need to be finish, as long as can see the basic pose, the charecter design, the action... No specific medial for this step.
Some time draw it on newspaper, re-cycle printed paper, my small A7 note book i use to carry around with me....
This time i draw it on the corner of my bank statement envelope by using a black ink ball pen.

2. To save time, i take a snapshot by using my NOKIA 5300 mobile phone. Transfer the picture to my Mac and open by using Adobe Photoshop.

3. I drag it onto a template (2700x2400) i have prepare. This size should be acceptable by all the 5 RF stock site. (picture 1)

4. I start to trace it out in Photoshop bath. Some time if too complicated i will trace it in Adobe Illustrator. To avoid the overlapping bath, i use few layer to separate it. (picture 2)

5. I start to put color by load selection from the bath i draw. On the base color layer, i add high light on a separate layer. I use the same base color on a different layer to multiply on top to show the deep. (picture 3)

6. To make it more details, i add some high light and shadow on the mouth. To do this, i load the mouth selection and add feather (3 to 5), then fill light color on a new layer and send to back on layer order. Move this layer a bit to one side to be appear as hight light. The same way i do to create the shadow, but this time i multiply with darker color. Do the same thing for the eye and others. (picture 4)

7. To make the pants look more lively, i add some folding line on it. To do this, first i load selection from bath, airbrush some dark color on a new layer and apply multiply.
From the same selection, i inverse it and airbrush some light color (on a new layer but NO multiply). This way both the dark area and the light area(high light) won't overlap each other. (picture 5)

Compare the finished illustration and the rough drawing, you can see i make some changes to the hand. The first rough drawing was only use as a guide, some details will change or add-on during the coloring process. That's why i didn't even drawing the shoe in the first place.

To install this plugin, just drop the plugin in your Adobe Illustrator Plug-ins folder.

To use it, on your illustrator file go to Select>Oblect menu.

Stock photos:- Only JPG files, RGB, at least 3 Megapixels, saved at the maximum quality will be accepted.

Vector illustrations:- Vector files should be saved in raster format, JPG at a high resolution, saved at highest quality and submitted in this format. As soon as they are accepted or right from the first submission you can also upload an additional format (ai, cdr or eps extensions accepted)

Keywords are the most important information you can provide to help buyers find your images. While people often know the specific subject they are looking for, concept keywords may help to inspire the end-user to choose your images.

Describe the subject of your image. You can have 20~50 words to describe all the pertinent details, and the more specific you are, the more likely your image is to be found by the right searches. Those are what you can describe:-

the subject (tree, car, butterfly, man, women, children...)
physical appearance (muscular, powerful, fit, strong...)
what they're doing (walking, reading, talking...)
where is the place (garden, home, school, beach, ocean, sea...)
how they feel (healthy, powerful, happy...)

After that it take 2 weeks for the cheque to reach your door step (depending on your location). Finally you get the cheque & bank-in to your local bank. Your bank then will take 4 weeks (1 month) to process a foreign cheque (also depending on your bank).

Minimum 10 of your best images for the initial review (photographs, illustrations or both) with keywords ready.
Scan a valid acceptable ID (passport, driver's licences...) for verification.

Go to Shutterstock.com (my referral link). Click "Not a Member?Sign Up to make $$$ now!".

The next window will be "Sign up" page. Fill in the necessary info & click on "continue with Sign Up" button.
The follow up window will be "Verifying Your Address" page. This is the time you need to upload your scanned ID to verify your self.
After they have conformed your ID, you can start to upload your 10 best stocks for initial review.
They need ALL the 10 stocks to be pass the initial review. If you can't fail it you only can resubmit after 3 months.

Go to iStockphoto.com (my referral link), because it's under my referral, the first page you will see my profile. Click on "Sign Up" button.

At the "Join Us" page, file in the username you want & Email. Click "Sign Up".
The "Membership Agreement" appear, click "I Agree".
Check your Email. They will send you a Email with the password. Type in your username & the password given to log-in.
Click on "Upload" at the side banner. A "Private Profile" page will appear. Fill in the particular info & click "continue" button.
After that, the "Contributor Application - Getting Started" page appear.
Choose what type of stock (image, flash, illustration/Vector or video) you wish to submit.
Follow through the step-by-step training tutorial. At the end of the tutorial click "Continue to the Application".
Fill out the Application Quiz. Answer all the questions and press "Submit".

If you try and search through the net, you will find lots of site are selling royalty free stock. Before you want join any of that, there's few things we need to find out first. How much they are selling and how much we will get? after all that's what we want. How they pay us, by cheque, by PayPal? Finally, what type of stock they are selling? photo, illustration, video clips or flash animations? So what you plan to sell?
